Happy Passover! Chag Samech from Israel!
Passover is celebrated by millions of Israelis all across the country. Here’s a cool take on the Exodus story . I’ve just run into it on You Tube and thought I must share it with you! Performed by a group of Israeli youngsters and students from the Israeli Academy for Leadership, is a take on the hit songs by P Diddy’s “Coming Home” and Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You”. What do you think? Aren’t they talented?
In case you need to refresh your memory here’s the story of Exodus in brief:
The bible tells us about the time when the Israelites were enslaved by the great Egyptian king, Pharoh. At some point Pharaoh begins to worry about the growing number of the Israelites fearing rivalry or uprising, he mercilessly commends to throw every Hebrew newborn baby boy into the big river of Nile. However, one boy’s life is miraculously saved. How is the baby boy save you may ask. Ironically, the boy is adopted by no one else but Pharaoh’s daughter. When the baby Moses grows up and becomes a man, he is commended by God to leave the Pharaoh family and lead his people to the holy land – land of Israel . As commanded by God, Moses bravely goes to the Pharaoh king and demands – let my people go!
As expected, Pharaoh is not willing to let go of his many useful slaves. God punishes the Egyptians with a plague that fills all the water sources in Egypt with blood. When this plague fails to convince Pharaoh to free the Hebrews, God strikes the land with 9 more, even worse plagues. The tenth plague that killed every first male born in Egypt was the last straw for Pharaoh. The Israelites are then commended to leave Egypt in a hurry so they don’t have enough time to prepare bread for the road. They take with them the partly baked bread which feeds them during the escape from Egypt to the Sinai desert until they reach the land of Israel.
We eat matzah to commemorate the hasty escape of the Israelites from the land of Egypt who didn’t have enough time to let their bread rise.
